3. Realme 6

Closing up the top 3 is the Realme 6, which goes for Ksh 25,500. You might think that Realme is the sea, endless and full of surprises. Okay, let me not overdo the analogy. The company has once again set standards on budget phones with the Realme 6. I call it the Real 6 because it’s the cheapest 90Hz phone you can buy today. And it has a lot more to offer than just a high refresh rate screen. It comes with a large 6.5″ 1080p screen with 90Hz refresh rate and it’s coupled by the gaming-friendly Helio G90T chip. And the 4,300 mAh battery is more than adequate with the 30W fast charging which is much appreciated.

Realme 6 might be a budget phone, but that doesn’t come at the expense of the camera like most companies do. On the back, you’d find a quad-camera setup with a 64MP primary, an 8MP ultrawide shooter, a 2MP macro snapper, and a 2MP depth sensor.

The Camon 17 Pro is Tecno’s latest and greatest to bring decent camera hardware, powerful midrange chipset and a big battery to a budget smartphone. For Ksh 29,900 you will get a large, 6.8-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, though it’s an LCD and not OLED. 

The Helio G95 should be easily good enough for most things, and the 5,000mAh battery promises excellent endurance not excluding the Camera hardware which sets this smartphone at number 4 in our ranking.

The images, when captured, serve up ample amounts of detail. The primary 64-megapixel Sony sensor is able to produce amazing images when the lighting is sufficient. However, in low light scenarios, one can notice the vibration, though I would add that things are still under control. Interestingly, Samsung has brought the Single Take feature from the flagships to this mid-segment phone. You’d get the same shot captured with almost all possible modes in one place so that you can choose the best and discard the rest. That’s a great plus for the budget phone field.

Videos

The Single Take feature lets users capture 10 seconds of footage in various modes with the wide-angle lens and is helpful for users who are unsure about how to capture a certain moment. The footage is well detailed here with videos taken at 4K@30fps or 1080p@30fps, gyro-EIS.

Selfies can be shot in regular mode, wide-angle mode and you can select the resolution manually to 32-megapixel as well. The front camera performs well and up to expectation, one can’t really tell much difference between the regular and the wide-angle selfie. It does capture an impressive amount of details if the lighting conditions are favourable and images look realistic thanks to accurate colour reproduction.

The M31s 32 MP selfie camera records video up to 4K@30fps or 1080p@30fps only. For some reason, the Super slo-mo gets background music added automatically while the slow-mo video offers you an option to add the background music. But with the Single Take feature, you get to record beautiful moments in video form and trust me the results will be surprising.

RECOMMENDATION

It will be an underscore for me to call the Samsung M31s a budget super camera phone because it is more than just that. I would even recommend it again and again for social media content creators and YouTubers in case one wants a budget phone that will deliver in the camera side for use when the need to take emergency footage pops up.

6. Tecno Camon 18

At number 6 is the Camon 18 is the latest device in the Tecno’s Camon series, released in November of 2021. The model is the direct successor to the Camon 17, and it is powered by Helio G88 CPU from MediaTek. The phone comes with improved and impressive features, it comes in a 6.8-inches screen with an FHD+ panel, 90Hz refresh and a centralized punched notch on the head.

The Xiaomi Redmi 10 was released on August 20th 2021 and goes for Ksh 19,500 at our store. Settling for number 7, the Redmi 10 seems like a worthy successor to the famous series offering a substantial upgrade over the Redmi 9 and adding a couple of stand-out features that are particularly hard to come across in this price range. At this price, you receive a set of stereo loudspeakers, a 90Hz high-refresh-rate display, reverse wired charging at 9W, a 50MP main camera and a dedicated microSD card slot to complement the rather generous 128GB of internal storage within the price range.

Surprisingly, you get a much better definition of the fine detail than any other phone in the price range so that’s something.

The selfies are an improvement over the Redmi 9’s as well and they are pretty good. There is some artificial sharpening that will bring out some skin imperfections a bit more than usual, but that’s what beautification modes are for. Also, there’s a significant amount of fine detail in the shots; your face will look natural, colours will be vibrant, and the dynamic range will be sufficiently wide.

The Desire 20 Pro was originally unveiled back in June, alongside the company’s first 5G phone – the HTC U20 5G. On 18th July 2021, HTC then confirmed that the Pro would be arriving in the market at any time. The Desire 20 Pro isn’t built to turn heads but at Ksh 28,500 price tag paired with a headphone jack, 5000mAh, 6.5inch 19.5:9 Full HD+ with 60Hz refresh rate IPS LCD display, isn’t a bad combination by any means. I still don’t know how Xiaomi managed to produce a very cheap phone with the expensive features it has. Poco X3 Pro is the first Snapdragon 860 carrier in the series and its bang for the buck features. The Poco X3 Pro is IP53-rated for dust protection and splash resistance, it packs a 6.67″ IPS LCD screen with 1080p resolution and 120Hz refresh rate support, and a 5160mAh battery capable of 33W fast charging. You also get stereo speakers, a microSD slot, NFC, an IR blaster, and even a 3.5mm jack and a super camera for only Ksh 28,900.

The focus is fixed; Night Mode is present here, too. The macro camera is 2MP with f/2.4 aperture, 1.75µm pixels, but lacks autofocus. Finally, there is a 2MP depth sensor. The main camera saves 12MP photos by default, and they turn out good. The resolved detail is enough but far from impressive – intricate details are often smeared anyway it’s a mid-range phone. The dynamic range is good, though, and even when the Auto HDR is active, it won’t trigger HDR. The photos are of good quality.

Poco X3 Pro Videos

The Poco X3 Pro captures videos up to 4K@30fps with its main camera, though 1080@60fps and 1080@30fps are available as well – and after a recent update – it supports up to 1080p@960fps video recording. The ultrawide snapper is limited to 1080p@30fps, while the macro cam maxes out at 720p@30fps. Clips offer a good amount of resolved detail, and the scene looks nice – the colours are accurate, the contrast is great, and the dynamic range is more than enough.
